Together, let us unveil the unseen the realm of demons. Let’s shining a light on a topic that has both captivated and frightened humanity from the beginning of time.
Where Do Demons Come From?
Origin Of Satan
While scripture does not expressly say, “This is where demons come from!” We do have sources that do well to explain the origin of demonic spirits.
Firstly, we know that everything that exists was created by God. According to John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16, everything that was made was made by Him. That includes both visible and invisible things, things in heaven, things on earth, and things under the earth.
Therefore, God made demons, right? Not exactly…
God does not create evil. In fact, evil is not even a created substance. Evil is simply the absence of God.
Isaiah 14:12-15 explains that Satan, or Lucifer, used to exist in Heaven. He was a high ranking angel at one time. However, pride and sinful lusts separated him from the Holy God.
As a result, we read that Satan was cast out of Heaven and removed from the presence of Almighty God.
Interestingly, Jesus says that He witnessed the account. “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! (Luke 10:18).”
Demons On Earth
What’s more, we read in Revelation 12 how demonic beings came to exist on earth.
This scripture gives the account of Satan being cast to the earth in relation to other events. It’s contains a fair amount of symbolism, but it’s not difficult to decipher.
Here’s a breakdown of the symbolism and how they translate:
- The woman, representing Israel.
- The dragon, representing Satan.
- The stars, referring to angelic beings.
- The man-child, referring to Jesus.
- The angel Michael, head of the angelic host.
- The offspring of the woman, representing Gentiles who come to faith in the Tribulation.
- The beast out of the sea, representing the antichrist.
- The beast out of the earth, representing the false prophet who promotes the antichrist.
Satan was cast out of Heaven because he was lifted up in pride. He had a desire to be greater than God.
As he was cast out, he brought 1/3 of the angels of Heaven with him.
These were once angels who were devoted to God Almighty. However, Lucifer was able to convince them to aid him in his quest to be worshiped as God.
Those angels were also cast out of Heaven along with Satan.
The account continues to explain how that Satan and his angels were waiting for the day that Jesus would be born. They hoped to destroy Him before He could carry out His plan of redemption.
Then, the narrative moves to future tense.
One day, there will arise a man who opposes all things that are of God. He will seek to be worshiped in the temple as God. The Bible refers to him as the Antichrist. You can read more about him in the book of Daniel or Revelation.
The Antichrist will have a helper called the False Prophet who will perform miracles with the aid of demonic spirits.
Ultimately, Jesus Christ will return and defeat the Antichrist and his armies. Jesus will then take His rightful place as King of all the earth.
To be completely transparent, scripture does not explicitly say where demons come from. However, it is very clear that demons are real. This is the best explanation as to their existence on earth.
Demons In The Bible
Demonic Encounters In The Old Testament
While demonic encounters do exist in the Old Testament, they are not nearly as common as in the New Testament.
The word ‘demon’ is used in the Old Testament 3 times. ‘Evil spirit’ is used 8 times. In Daniel we see the use of the word ‘prince’ to refer to demonic beings.
Learning To Be Alone With God: The Power Of Personal Devotion
There are no instances of casting out demons recorded in the Old Testament. The concept of exorcisms is well documented in extra-biblical sources, but we have no reference in the Old Testament scriptures.
In fact, the Old Testament does not directly refer to any human being possessed by a demonic spirit.
We know that people were demon possessed before Jesus began His ministry, because He set many people free who had been under demonic possession for years.
However, we do not know how or if these people were delivered.
Christ’s Encounters With Demons
Jesus Christ was the first person in history to have absolute control over demonic beings.
With a simple command He was able to break their hold on suffering people. At His presence demons shook with fear. Christ alone has the power to control evil spirits, and He grants His followers the same ability through the power of the Holy Ghost.
The life of Jesus Christ is marked by extraordinary events that have captivated the hearts and minds of millions throughout history.
Among these awe-inspiring encounters are His powerful interactions with demons and evil spirits.
These encounters not only reveal His divine authority over the forces of darkness but also provide invaluable lessons about the power of faith, compassion, and redemption.
Let’s look at a few of Christ’s encounters with the demonic realm.
- Demons cast out of many. (Mrk 1:32-34; Mat 8:16-17; Luk 4:40-41)
- Demons cast out of people in Galilee. (Mrk 1:39)
- In the Synagogue at Capernaum. (Mrk 1:21-28; Luk 4:31-37)
- A man in Capernaum. (Mat 9:32-33)
- A (second?) man in Capernaum. (Mat 12:22; Luk 11:14)
- Gentile woman’s daughter. (Mat 15:21-28; Mrk 7:24-30)
- Mary Magdalene. (Luk 8:2; Mrk 16:9)
- People In Galilee. (Mrk 3:10-12)
- The Man of Gergesenes. (Mat 8:28-32; Mrk 5:1-13; Luk 8:26-33)
- A Man’s Son. (Mat 17:14-21; Mrk 9:17-29; Luk 9:38-47)
Let’s look a bit more closely at a few specific examples.
Jesus’ Encounter with Legion
One of the most iconic encounters is found in the Gospel of Mark (5:1-20), where Jesus met a man possessed by multiple evil spirits or “Legion.”
The possessed man lived among the tombs, tortured by the dark forces within him. Scripture says that he cut himself, screamed, and cried constantly.
However, when Jesus approached, the demons recognized His authority and begged not to be tormented before their appointed time.
Jesus commanded them to leave the man and enter a herd of swine nearby, which rushed into the sea and drowned.
This extraordinary event showcased Jesus’ power to deliver individuals from the grip of demonic possession.
Healing the Demon-Possessed Boy
In the Gospel of Matthew (17:14-21), a desperate father sought Jesus’ help for his son, who was severely possessed by a demon.
The disciples were unable to cast out the evil spirit, but Jesus, moved by the father’s faith, rebuked the demon, and it left the boy, instantly healing him.
It’s in this account that the boy’s father says the iconic words, “I believe. But help my unbelief.”
Jesus highlighted the importance of faith, teaching that even a small amount of genuine belief can move mountains and conquer the forces of darkness.
Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently demonstrated His authority over evil spirits by casting them out with a simple command.
In numerous instances, individuals possessed by demons were brought to Him, and He liberated them from their torment. These encounters highlight Jesus’ supremacy over the spiritual realm and His unwavering dedication to freeing people from the clutches of darkness.
These encounters teach us valuable lessons about the importance of faith, the authority of Jesus over evil, and the redemption available to all who seek Him.
They serve as a testament to His unwavering love and the ultimate victory He achieved through His death and resurrection.
As we reflect on these extraordinary events, we are reminded of the hope and salvation found in a relationship with Jesus Christ, who triumphs over every darkness and brings light and freedom into our lives.
Are Demons As Active Today As They Were In Bible Times?
Demonic Activity Today
There is no reason to believe, and no biblical evidence to suggest, that demonic activity has stopped or slowed down since the time of Christ.
In some corners of the world, satanic phenomena are commonplace. In other places, demons go about their evil, destructive work in more subtle, but no less real ways.
It is possible that that the physical presence of the Son of God was responsible for so many spectacular demonic encounters in the New Testament.
However, it could be just as true that we are less aware of demonic activity today since we have identified other, perhaps physical or psychological, labels for it.
While not every ailment is spiritual in nature, scripture does prove that some physical illnesses are demonic in nature. Much like the young boy in Matthew 17:14 who was accused of being a lunatic and having seizures.
Had a modern day doctor diagnosed him, it’s likely he would have been on multiple medications and still fighting an internal spiritual war.
How Should Christians Respond To Demonic Activity Today?
It’s important to remember that all followers of Jesus Christ are still engaged in spiritual warfare.
The spirit world does exists whether we like to admit it or not.
Therefore, we should be careful to take the advice of Paul in Ephesians 6 and put on the full armor of God.
Evil spirits always have, and always will, tried to overthrow the Kingdom of God.
They hate all things godly and upright. Which, if you’re following Christ correctly, includes you!
Luckily, scripture is clear that we have no reason to fear as long as we are walking with Christ.
James 4:7 encourages us to resist the devil and he will flee from us!
1 John 4:4 also speaks an encouraging reminder. The spirit of God that lives inside you is much greater than the demonic spirits in the world.
Conclusion
Through faith in Jesus Christ and the power of His name, we are equipped to resist and overcome the influence of evil forces.
It is essential to maintain a biblical perspective on the existence of demons while not becoming consumed by fear.
Christians are called to put on the full armor of God, engage in spiritual warfare through prayer, and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to discern and confront the schemes of the enemy.
In conclusion, the existence of demons is a reality that cannot be ignored or dismissed.
While skeptics may hold differing views, Christians find comfort in the knowledge that, through the power of Jesus Christ, we have the authority to resist and overcome the forces of darkness.
By remaining steadfast in faith, seeking spiritual discernment, and relying on the strength of God, we can navigate the spiritual battles we may face.
As a result we can live lives that honor God and bring light into a world touched by darkness.
