God Is The Master Artist

The Beginning

The first sentence of scripture informs us that God exists and that He created the earth. The Bible begins by introducing us to the Master Artist, “In the beginning, God created heaven and earth.” What a monumental statement!

If you believe the first verse of the Bible, then you should have no problem with the next 31,101 verses that follow – to the end of Revelation. In fact, creation itself points to the existence of God (Romans 1:20; Psalms 19:1-4). No doubt an intelligent and complex Creator created the intricate workings of our earth and solar system.

God is the Supreme Intelligence, Almighty Creator, and Master Artist. To put it simply, God is big. Really big. He is also complex. Really complex. All wisdom and power belong to Him (Daniel 2:20).

There is no way our human minds will ever fully understand everything about Him. Do not let this discourage you. Instead, find encouragement in it! If you could easily understand the inner workings of God, He wouldn’t be a very big God, would He?

The Godhead

God exists as one almighty Being who consists of three separate Persons. Significantly, the term for this three-in-one entity is the Godhead, or Trinity. The Trinity is the foundational Christian belief that God is one Being who exists in three Persons: Father, Son, and Spirit.

Learn More About The Trinity Here

Genesis 1:1 introduces us to the Father. As we continue reading, we meet the remaining two persons in the Godhead, though, not formally. We will be introduced to them in more detail later.

1:1: God, the Father, creates heaven and earth.

1:2: The Spirit moves upon the water.

1:3: God said, Let there be light, and there was light. This one is a little more complex than the first two. Read the first five verses of St. John 1 to learn that Jesus, the Son, is the Word of God and that He existed in the beginning. When God spoke, it was His Word, or Jesus, who moved to create. Isn’t it amazing how all three members of the Trinity were present and working in the creation of the world?!

If you find this to be slightly confusing, don’t be discouraged. It will all make more sense as we continue through the scriptures.

The Creation

The rest of this chapter covers the seven days of creation. We believe these to be seven literal days, not poetic expressions that indicate a longer span of time.

Bible scholar and commentator Leon Morris worded it nicely when he said,

“The best way to interpret the Book of Genesis is not to interpret it at all. That is, we accept the fact that it says exactly what it was meant to say.”

Enduring Word Commentary

We believe the Genesis account of creation to be quite literal. Each day of creation focuses on a specific aspect of nature in a particular order. Each day, God looks at His creation and exclaims, “It is good!” And on the final day, He steps back to look at all He has created as a whole and, again, exclaims, “It is VERY good!”

After six days of creation, when there is nothing left to create, God rests. He does not rest because He is tired or worn out. God does not get tired. He rests on the seventh day as an example to us. In the pages to come, we will see God begin to teach His creation the importance of resting on the seventh day, but more on that later.

“But isn’t the earth billions of years old?” you might ask. If you believe the Bible, the earth is only about 6,000 years young. It’s possible, and very probable, that God created the world to be mature from day one. No doubt He would have created a world that is already established and running. God is the Master Artist, remember? The earth’s natural systems were likely created as if they had been cycling for years.

Reflection

As you go through your routine today, try to be mindful of God’s creation. Think about the intricacies of weather cycles, birds, insects, plant life, etc., and how He created each one with a purpose. These are not accidents that were created by chance. These are masterpieces created by the Master Artist.

Learning To Be Alone With God

Think about how you were created by God with a purpose (Psalm 139:13-16). In God’s eyes, you are not here by mistake. He has a purpose for you. God is the Master Artist. He created you because He wants to have a personal relationship with you!
